Fifty years old and not even notice it

The year 1997 is a really significant one: Ferrari turns fifty. On this special occasion 2,000 Ferrari cars arrive from Rome to Maranello. The City Council is busy in implementing a “widespread” photographic exhibition and other significant festivals downtown.

Renzo Piano and the Formula Man

In the mid-90s, the Ferrari factory undergoes a significant transformation by introducing the features of the present Ferrari Citadel. “Formula Man” program, backed by Luca Cordero of Montezemolo, takes its first steps towards the implementation of a factory model that has to be a human-sized place. The main goal is to maintain high workers’ life quality standards thanks to working environments designed by great brands of architecture. The first piece of work is the famous Wind Tunnel, designed by Renzo Piano. Today it stands out behind the new entrance, with its unmistakable shape. It is a sort of sculpture in honour of speed,  where the classic air ducting – necessary in every Wind Tunnel – becomes the hub of the building  shaped as a piece of engine.

A Ferrari for Enzo

Only 400 specimens to celebrate 55 years of activity and a car that has soon become a legend: the Ferrari Enzo has an important name in Ferrari history and hosts of admirers all over the world, making it one of the most appreciated and desired cars among those produced at the Maranello-based factory. The 65 ° aspirated V12 engine, the fully carbon fibre chassis and six-speed sequential gear make it a little jewel, embellished by the elegance of the lines designed by Pininfarina. On top of all this, its maximum speed above 350 km / h makes it the fastest Ferrari road car of the time.

The revival of the circuit

The success of the road cars goes hand in hand with a revival of race cars on the circuit: the early years of the century mark the beginning of a trophy-winning period that allows the Scuderia to dominate the Formula 1 Championship both in the Constructors’ and in the Drivers’ Category.  Left behind a disappointing lack of positive results lasting since 1983, Ferrari earns back victories 26 years later and succeeds in bringing home the Constructors’ Championship Title in 1999. The following year Ferrari reasserts its supremacy while winning the Constructors’ along with the Drivers’ Title through Michael Schumacher’s driving, who thus wins his third World Title, his first one as part of the Ferrari Team.

Such profitable a partnership continues uninterruptedly until 2004, enabling the Prancing Horse Company to definitely overshadow the opponents for five years and reviving fans’ enthusiasm all around the world. The Schumacher-Ferrari binomial is going to last until 2006 for a total of 180 Grand Prix: the German driver is to become the most successful Formula 1 driver in history at that time, holding several record-breaking figures, among which: the highest number of wins (91) and podiums (155) gained, and the highest number of pole positions (68) and fastest laps on the track (77).

Enzo Ferrari is in the heart of Maranello

In the meantime, in 1988, on occasion of the centenary of Enzo Ferrari’s birth, his son Piero presents the town with a statue by Marino Quartieri dedicated to his father. It is placed alongside the Town Hall. Follow the trail signposts “Paesaggi d’Autore” to find it, together with the other beauties of the city!

The Formula Man is complete

Over the course of seven years, the Maranello plant changes its attitude from the ground up. The “Formula Man” project, involving the building of a “Ferrari Citadel” planned on a human scale, is fully realized between 2002 and 2009. The “Citadel” is enriched by the co-operation of internationally renowned architects. In 2002, the work starts with Luigi Sturchio and Marco Visconti who care for the Logistics of Sport Management and the new Mechanical Working Sites. The shape of Logistics reminds of an airship. The Mechanical Working sites, instead, look as the modular alternation of working areas and verdant oases that loosen the otherwise dominant technology. Plant elements and natural brightness are keywords in the restyling of the plant. In 2004 two other structures are renovated. Marco Visconti is responsible for the Paint/Finishing – Pavilion where transparent inserts permit to have a look at the working stages from the outside. The building is protected with a kind of “hi-tech cover” made of aluminium and opal glass, to better regulate climatic and energy conditions. Inside the factory, contacts between workers and materials from the painting process are minimized. This same year, Massimiliano Fuksas sets up the “Product Development Centre”.  The natural lighting is shed here by the transparent and staggered structure surfaces, which are linked by means of hanging walkways. Such natural elements as water, lava rocks, bamboo and white pebbles are added to enhance an environment that stimulates relax and thought. In 2008 the building site is the corporate Restaurant, and the craftsman is Marco Visconti again. The architect designs a curvilinear volume, corresponding to the section of a helicopter shovel. The structure is bright, organized with breakfast bar furnishings, and considers advanced energy criteria and air quality control.

Finally, the small inside gardens are back in 2009 at the New Production Lines designed by Jean Nouvel. Here the natural element is planned to absorb noises. Once again, a cover of thin mirrored sheets and large skylights take in transparency and brightness.


The golden age is also credit to a close and coherent team, able to bring Ferrari performance back to the top of world motor racing under the supervision of General Manager Jean Todt, of Technical Director Ross Brawn and of Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who had been standing side by side with Enzo Ferrari for many years in his past career.

Two hundreds Kimi Raikkonen

The decade of satisfactions and triumphs completes in 2007 when Ferrari obtains again both the Constructors’ and the Driver Championship, won by the Finnish Kimi Raikkonen. In the Grand Prix of China that year, Kimi awards the Scuderia Ferrari the Title number two-hundred, and the following year the two hundredth Pole Position.

The Scuderia becomes a legend

At the end of 2007, a remarkable series of results allows the Scuderia to become a legend: Ferrari achieves the highest number of World Constructors’ Titles, i.e. 15, and the highest number of titles in the World Drivers’ Championship, gained 16 times.
