THE NATURAL RESERVE “SALSE DI NIRANO”
The Natural Reserve “Salse di Nirano” is an important geological complex of international relevance, it is a
typical example of tourism and environment promotion.
Salse di Nirano comes from hydrocarbon deposits which mainly consist of methane (gas bubbles) and in a
minor part of liquid (petrol) which, rising through the surface, dissolve the clay and create the typical small
cone-shaped volcanoes craters.
Inside these defined cones the emissions of mud mixed with the hydrocarbon seem to be boiling, but they
actually flow out of the cones at room temperature. Besides, they are salty and that is the reason why they
are called “Salse”.
Salse di Nirano complex is with no doubt the most impressive phenomenon of this nature in the whole
country, its relevance is underlined by the interest that historians and academics have always enhanced by
addressing it with a variety of colourful remarks and fanciful observations since ancient times.
