SALSE DI NIRANO NATURAL RESERVE
The Natural Reserve “Salse di Nirano” is located at the border between the municipality of Maranello and the one of Fiorano Modenese. It is the most important complex of the Emilia Romagna region. The small volcanoes scattered on the mudly and dry ground confer to the surroundings a moonlike scenario. These “Salse” consists of emissions of cold and salty mud spilling out from small cone-shaped volcanoes craters from which underground gasses and bituminous substances erode, giving origin to mud flows. This phenomenon is linked to the presence of hydrocarbon deposits in the deep layers of the soil which is originated by anaerobic decomposition of animals organic waste. Due to the pressure of underground gasses this mudflows rises to the surface through deep cracks in the ground.
“Borboj” is the term used in the local dialect to reproduce the constant sound made by the volcanoes. In this environment characterized by forests and ravines, despite the aridity and high salinity of the soil, lots of different animal species and plants have adopted to grow. The Visitor Center “Ca Tossi” sited inside the Natural Reserve is in charge of welcoming visitors by organizing and promoting guided educational tours. Inside the Center tourists can pay a visit to the History Museum, the Documentation Center and the Naturalistic Library.
